I'm a graduate student at Newhouse. Every morning, I wake up excited to learn more. It's about time I documented my time here. ►

Today we got swamped with @twentywhat design meetings to narrow down our nameplate (look familiar?). It felt like a real magazine, with constant instructions to change even the tiniest things (like the tail of a “t”). I loved it.

Tomorrow we’ll meet bright and early over coffee to plan the magazine’s style sheet and color scheme. Can’t wait — thanks to everyone on the interwebz who shared wise design advice to me yesterday!

Today we got assigned to #redesign the @twentywhat logo and nameplate! Here are some ideas I contributed. We’ll vote on the official one tomorrow. Do any stand out to you? I tend to prefer bold typefaces, industrial lines and splashes of color. One of my classmates told me my work looked modern and edgy. I really liked to hear that but it’s tricky because @twentywhat is a professional women’s magazine, and an “edgy look” doesn’t fly for the target audience. Still, I’m really happy to play with type, color & graphics again. It’s like being back in Boot Camp. :)

[I admit— I snatched that fashion photo from the Web! I don’t know the photographer and am sorry not to give credit. In my defense, this is purely for my education in design. Zero commercial gain.]

I’ve never been a gold star student. My dad was a straight A student and I always wanted to show him I was too. I never could — every semester, without fail, there would be something off. This has been my last semester at Newhouse (capstone aside) and I finally did it. Content doesn’t even beginning to describe it. :)
It took an entire academic career to learn how to be a student, but I did finally figure it out.

It happened! But it’s not over yet. I donned the funny hood, the Harry Potter robes and the cardboard hat & tassle, but there’s still a full capstone project to complete before I snag that master’s diploma! Wish me luck!

Sorkin’s amazing commencement speech to our graduating class of 2012. Ecstatic he spoke.

Because I’m a dummy & didn’t think to do this originally, here’s Aaron Sorkin’s full commencement speech from over the weekend up at ‘Cuse.

If you don’t know how the master’s hood works, you probably don’t deserve to have the master’s degree.

For my final project in Designing Interactivity (and final project at Newhouse!), I’m creating a portfolio website from scratch. Lots of planning and coding left to do, but here’s what I have so far. It’s a whole lot of nothing right now, but I’ll post the finished project this time next week when it’s due.

On Getting Denied by Aziz Ansari

Here’s a little post I penned at 2 a.m. after spooning the last dregs of chocolate chip cookie dough in our freezer. Aziz Aziz Aziz why you gotta be so cold, man?

    newshousebunker:

A PRESS PASS is a golden ticket for journalists, photographers, filmmakers and any storyteller wanting to tell a proper story. A denied press pass can feel like anything from a minor snub to a slap in the face. Last Friday, it was a slap in the face. Like many other campus media, we had a reporter/photographer team ready and rearing to cover comedian Aziz Ansari last week, but Aziz Ansari, well, he just wasn’t ready and rearing for us.

Just one day before Ansari was scheduled to perform at the Oncenter War Memorial on April 13, University Union sent an urgent and apologetic email. After being completely unresponsive for several weeks, Ansari dropped the ball.

    Flash Fiction: On Microblogging.

I spent last night with @Pinterest. She was so gentle and nice to me. She pushed my hair behind my ear and told me I was pretty. We talked about my tattoo ideas. She reminded me I’ve always wanted to start an antique fork collection and she recommended some places where I could start. She taught me how to make Peach Vanilla Bean Bundt Cake with Peach Soaking Syrup. She inspired me. I fucked up the first batch because I softened the salted butter instead of the unsalted, but she just laughed and used it to make a small tart while I tried again. We laughed about it later. When the cake was done, we could only finish 3/4 of it, but it made my apartment smell so good.

Then I went back to Facebook. After spending all that time with Pinterest, he acted mean and arrogant and he hurt my feelings. He told me I was only adequate. He didn’t even ask how my night was but rather listed off his complaints and upcoming social events, of which I could give two shits. He reminded me of all the smarter, funnier, prettier, more accomplished women he could be hanging out with. Then he demanded to know where I was last night.

I tried to explain it to Twitter but you know Twitter. She doesn’t fucking shut up.
